My name is Carly Schoolemmer and I live on a farm just outside of a small community called Mundare. On my farm, we have a mixed cattle and grain farm running 200 head of cattle and farm roughly 2,600 acres of crop land. I graduated in 2016 from Lakeland College in Vermilion, AB obtain my Agribusiness diploma and I am currently working towards my Horticulture diploma online through the University of Guelph. Right now, my fiance and I are becoming more integrated into my family’s farm, being the 4th generation of Pawluk Farms. We are also working towards starting a small scaled market garden business and becoming more sustainable farmers. We have one daughter currently and we want to be more sustainable so we can teach her about agriculture, where are food comes from and guide her to potentially be a farmer in the future. What I like to do on my free time is play sports like volleyball and slo-pitch. I also like to go on fishing trips with my family, go snowboarding in the mountains, and simply just having a campfire.
Things that I want to accomplish in the mentorship program is to become more involved and more aware in agriculture. The world is changing so drastically and people are losing interest in agriculture. My generation needs to be more aware about agriculture and what it can do for us in the future. With technology, it is making farming easier and more advanced. So with our generations knowledge, it will be our jobs to make sure that even with all of these changes, we still need to feed the world. I also want to gain a better understanding of the World Market and the politics involved with agriculture. I was never really interested in the politics and grain marketing, but now that I am becoming more involved with agriculture, I have to pay for attention to these things. My last goal that I want to accomplish is that I want to be a role model for the next generation. I want to help educate younger people and future farmers about how great agriculture is and without it, the world will not prosper. Less kids are interested in agriculture and I want to a voice for them.
I am really looking forward to being a part of this program. I plan to learn a lot from my mentor and from attending events. I am so excited to bring agriculture to a whole new level.
